OH, What to DOOOO?!

OK,…so what can we JUST ORDINARY PEOPLE do about such a vast issue as climate change?  It can feel a bit overwhelming, right?

But, just keep in mind that we care about and are working not only for our comfort today and tomorrow and until we retire, perhaps, but for our children and all future generations. They already stand to inherit a more troublesome climate world than we have had to face.  Already we have 20 feet of sea level rise around the world baked into the contents of our atmosphere from carbon and methane emissions to date. Let’s do all we can to lessen the burden on them. Let’s try to stop it there!

Here are 20 things one can do, listed below.  Some things in this list will not fit your circumstances or life.  But something will!

1. Install a programmable thermostat

2. Move your thermostat down 2° in winter and up 2° in summer

3. Clean or replace filters on your furnace and air conditioner

4. Choose energy efficient appliances when making new purchases

5. Do not leave appliances on standby

6. Defrost old fridges and freezers regularly

7. Use a clothesline instead of a dryer whenever possible

8. Cover your pots while cooking

9. Use the washing machine or dishwasher only when they are full

10. Take a shower instead of a bath

11. Use less hot water

12. Reuse your shopping bag

13. Be sure you’re recycling at home

14. Recycle your organic waste

15. Plant a tree

16. Buy locally grown and produced foods

17. Seek out and support local farmers markets

18. Reduce the number of miles you drive by walking, biking, carpooling or taking mass transit wherever possible

19. Start a carpool with your coworkers or classmates

20. Check your tires weekly to make sure they’re properly inflated
